Hawaii Style Stew

Ingredients: 2 pounds lean stewing beef, cut into 1-inch cubes; 1/2 cup flour; 1/4 cup canola oil; 1 or 2 medium onion(s), wedged; 1 clove garlic, pressed; 5 cups water; 2 bay leaves, broken; 2 teaspoons salt (more as desired); 1/4 teaspoon pepper; 2 cans (8 oz.) tomato sauce; 1 can (13.5 oz.) whole or stewed tomatoes; 3 large carrots, cut into chunks; 3 potatoes, pared and quartered; 1 cup sliced celery (3 large or 4 medium); 1/2 cup sherry (optional); 1 small cabbage, wedged (optional)

A home recipe for Hawaii Style Stew.

Instructions

Dredge beef in flour (use a ziplock bag)
Brown lightly on all sides in hot oil.
Add onions and garlic and brown lightly
Add water and bay leaves.
Simmer 1.5 hours or until beef is tender.
Add remaining ingredients and simmer an additional 30 minutes or until the veggies are tender
The stew may be thickened with a flour-water mixture.
Usually we have the cover half on when simmering for 1.5 hours and then the last 30 minutes we take the cover off.
If the meat is not tender, buy from a different store!

A long list of ingredients, but very common and easy to find in your kitchen or at your local grocery store. We normally don't add the optional ingredients and use only 1 onion.
